Welcome to Sønderborg’s thriving second-hand scene!

Whether you’re furnishing a new apartment on a budget or hunting for unique vintage treasures, Sønderborg offers a warm and welcoming array of thrift shops and markets. From charity-run boutiques that support good causes to sprawling flea markets and specialty vintage stores, you’ll find plenty of pre-loved bargains waiting to be discovered.

In this guide, we’ll introduce you to the best second-hand shops in Sønderborg – and even a few online tips and fun facts – so you can shop sustainably and score some great deals in the process.

Charity Shops (Non-Profit Thrift Stores)

Sønderborg’s charity shops are run by volunteers and support various humanitarian or social causes. Shopping here means finding great deals while your money goes to charity, so everyone wins!

These stores are known for their friendly atmosphere and ever-changing selection of donations. Here are the charity thrift shops in Sønderborg:

Røde Kors Genbrug (Red Cross Thrift Shop)
Damgade 71A

The Red Cross operates a large second-hand shop on Damgade 71A.

It’s one of the biggest thrift shops in town, and one of our favourites offering clothing, furniture, home goods, books, and more – all neatly arranged by a dedicated team of volunteers. You’ll often find quality clothing for men and women, small furnishings, decor, and sometimes even electronics or toys. Proceeds support Red Cross’s humanitarian work locally and abroad.

Kirkens Korshær Genbrug
Stenager 15A (and Østergade 5)

This is always the first place I go. Kirkens Korshær (Dan Church Social) runs multiple thrift shops in Sønderborg. Their main outlet is a large store at Stenager 15A on the outskirts of town, which has a bit of everything: affordable used furniture, appliances, kitchenware, clothes, and curios. It’s essentially a big warehouse of bargains, known for very low prices.

In the city center, Kirkens Korshær also has a smaller boutique on Østergade 5 (in the back alley by Netto) focusing mostly on second-hand clothing and accessories. All sales support the charity’s social work for those in need.

Kirkens Genbrug – Spang 11, Ulkebøl

Located a few kilometers from central Sønderborg (in Ulkebøl), Kirkens Genbrug is one of the largest thrift stores in the area. It’s run by a local church association and stocked with furniture, clothing, books, kitchenware, and more across multiple rooms. The selection is impressively broad – you might stumble upon anything from vintage dinner sets to old vinyl records. Despite its size, this shop maintains a friendly small-community vibe.

Frelsens Hær Genbrug (Salvation Army Thrift)
Nørrekobbel 17

Tucked next to the Nørrekobbel recycling area, the Salvation Army’s thrift store is a hidden gem for thrifters. It features affordable second-hand furniture, household items, clothes, and books. The inventory comes from community donations, and the income supports the Salvation Army’s charitable activities.

Mødrehjælpens Børnetøjsbutik
Perlegade 69

Mødrehjælpen (Mother’s Aid) runs a specialized second-hand shop in Perlegade that focuses on children’s clothing, toys, and baby equipment. It’s a bright, kid-friendly store where parents can find everything from tiny infant onesies to toddler rain boots, plus strollers, baby gear, and maternity wear – all gently used and budget-friendly. We’ve used it when the kids were younger. There’s even a play corner for kids and a cozy area where you can nurse or change your baby, making it a welcoming space for young families.

Dansk Folkehjælp Genbrugsbutik
Perlegade 61

One of the newer charity shops in town, this thrift store is run by Danish People’s Aid (Dansk Folkehjælp). It opened in 2020 on Perlegade (right in the city center) and has quickly become a favorite for its eclectic mix of items. Browse here for adult clothing, shoes, books, kitchenware, home décor, music and movies (yes, they even have vinyl and DVDs!), children’s items and more – all sorted and sold at bargain prices. The shop’s profits go toward helping disadvantaged families in the local area (for example, providing Christmas aid and school supplies for kids in need.

Røde Kors Sundeved
Stationsgade 3, Vester Sottrup

We did not know this shop. Facebook user Jude told us about it.
Shorter but later opening hours will maybe make this shop easier for the working people who have access to a car. In a huge shop they have snall furniture, books, clothes and lots of other things. Run by the local Red Cross branch, it’s a welcoming spot for both donations and bargain hunters.

Municipal Second-Hand Shops (Recycle Centers’ Shops)

Sønderborg Kommune also plays a role in promoting reuse. The municipality’s two main recycling centers each host a “genbrugsbutik” (reuse shop) where items dropped off for trash get a second life instead. If you’re environmentally conscious (or just love a good deal), these are must-visit spots:

Nørrekobbel Genbrugsbutik (Recycle Shop)
Nørrekobbel 7

At the Nørrekobbel 7 Recycling Center on the north side of town, you’ll find a special thrift outlet called a “building materials treasure trove.” Here the focus is on upcycling – you can pick up used lumber, windows, doors, tiles, fixtures, tools, and hardware for DIY projects. They also set aside usable furniture, appliances, and home goods that people have discarded – all available either free or for a fairly low price. The selection varies daily, depending on what gets dropped off, but many locals have furnished workshops and homes from this place. It’s open limited hours, but it’s worth timing a visit if you like to tinker or need materials for a home project.

You will also find a “normal” second-hand shop here with your typical furniture, clothing, books as well as a number of bicycles.

Opening hours for the Reuse Shop / Reuse Building Materials Market:
Monday – Friday: 12:00 – 16:00
Saturday: 10:00 – 14:00

Glansager Genbrugsbutik
Foldager 1

Located at the Glansager Recycling Center, East of Sønderborg towards Augustenborg, this is a more general-purpose thrift corner. You might find old furniture, bicycles, toys, kitchenware, books, and random decorative items that have been saved from the scrap heap. All items are donated via the recycle bins and then given away or sold at token prices to encourage reuse. It’s a smaller setup than a regular store – basically a section of the recycling depot – but worth checking if you’re in the area or visiting the recycle center. Like Nørrekobbel’s shop, it usually opens a few afternoons during the week and on Saturday mornings.

For-Profit Second-Hand Shops and Antiques

Beyond the charities and civic initiatives, Sønderborg also has privately-run second-hand businesses. These range from curated vintage boutiques to massive flea warehouses. While these shops exist to turn a profit, they still offer great deals and unique products you won’t find elsewhere. Here are a few notable for-profit second-hand outlets:

Design Retro
Stolbrovej 8 (Kær)

For lovers of classic Danish design furniture, Design Retro is a dream come true. This specialty store (located just outside central Sønderborg, in the Kær area) deals in mid-century modern and retro furniture, lighting, and decor. You’ll find famous Danish brands and designers represented – think Piet Hein, Verner Panton, Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, and more. Every piece here is pre-owned but carefully selected for quality and style. Prices are higher than the charity shops, but still far below new retail for such design icons.

The shop is run by passionate furniture experts who can tell you the story behind many items. Even if you’re just browsing, it feels like walking through a gallery of Scandinavian design history.

Loppemarked Syd (Gamlefund)
Løntoft 7

Billing itself as “Southern Jutland’s largest thrift store,” Loppemarked Syd is an indoor mega-flea market on the outskirts of Sønderborg. It’s essentially a huge warehouse (over 1200 m² of space) filled with second-hand goods from estate cleanouts and moving sales. The inventory is incredibly diverse: antique and modern furniture, collectibles, dishes, electronics, books, artworks, tools – you name it, it’s probably somewhere in there! New truckloads of items arrive frequently, so each weekend brings new treasures to dig through. The market is typically open on Saturdays and Sundays (10:00–15:00), and shoppers line up to be the first in when the doors open.

Indoor Flea Markets & Swap Events

Sønderborg has embraced the “indoor flea market” concept, where individuals can rent a stall or shelf to sell their second-hand items under one roof. These markets are great for spending a rainy afternoon browsing because you get the variety of a flea market without having to wait for summer weather. It’s a fun, easy way to buy and sell pre-loved treasures without having to be there in person. We’ve already mentioned a couple (Loppemarked Syd, which is one big warehouse of goods, and it’s somewhat like a giant flea market itself). Here are two very popular indoor flea market venues in Sønderborg:

Kirppu Sønderborg
Grundtvigs Allé 202

Kirppu is a nationwide chain of indoor flea markets (the name “Kirppu” is Finnish for “flea”). The Sønderborg Kirppu is a huge hall with over 250 stalls, each rented by different people who display their second-hand goods. As a shopper, you can wander through the aisles browsing everything from clothes, toys, and kitchenware to collectibles, vintage decor, and electronics. Prices are marked on each item, and you pay at a central checkout – it’s very convenient. Kirppu is open 7 days a week, so you can get your thrifting fix any day.

Saturday – Sunday 10 – 17

Loppebazar
Stenager 15A

Loppebazar.dk is Sønderborg’s local indoor flea market (similar in concept to Kirppu). It’s located at Stenager 15A (sharing an address with Kirkens Korshær’s furniture outlet, but it’s a separate business). Inside, you’ll find aisles of numbered stalls and shelves stocked by different sellers. The range of items is vast: second-hand clothes, children’s items, books, antiques, kitchen goods, hobby equipment, and more. Loppebazar is open every day (weekdays until 17:30, weekends until 16:00), making it easy to drop in whenever you have spare timegenbrugguide.dk.

Second-Hand Events in Sønderborg

Beyond the everyday shopping, Sønderborg also enjoys some regular flea markets and seasonal events that second-hand enthusiasts will love:

  • Weekly Flea Market at Rønhaveplads: Every Wednesday from 10:00 to 16:00, local vendors set up stalls at Rønhaveplads (the square at the top of Perlegade, by the bus station). This open-air flea market runs year-round, weather permitting. You can browse stalls for antiques, vintage décor, clothes, records, handcrafted items, and random bric-à-brac. It’s a charming mid-week event – perfect for a stroll after grabbing a coffee.
  • Bynight and Festival Markets: During town festivals or “By Night” late-shopping events, you’ll often find pop-up flea markets or garage sale tables in the city center. For example, in summer Sønderborg has a sidewalk sale day where private individuals can sell used items on the pedestrian street, and clubs like the scouting group Blå Kors (Blue Cross) or “Blæksprutterne” have held annual flea sales for charity on weekend. These events are typically announced on posters around town, in the local newspaper SønderborgNYT, or on Facebook. They’re great opportunities to snag a deal and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

(Pro tip: If you have items to sell yourself, many of these events allow anyone to rent a stall for a small fee. It’s a fun way to declutter and meet fellow Sønderborg residents at the same time!)

Online Second-Hand Options

Prefer shopping from your couch? Denmark has several robust online platforms for second-hand trading, and many Sønderborg locals use them alongside the physical shops:

  • Den Blå Avis (DBA.dk): Denmark’s largest online classifieds marketplace. It’s like Craigslist or Gumtree – you can find everything here, from used furniture and electronics to cars and bikes. Search by area (zip code 6400 for Sønderborg) to find sellers nearby. Many postings in Sønderborg offer pickup, and some sellers might even deliver large items locally for a fee. The site is in Danish, but fairly intuitive (use Google Translate if needed). Always practice usual caution when buying online; meet in public places for small items or bring a friend if visiting a seller’s home.
  • Gul og Gratis: Another popular Danish classifieds site, literally meaning “Yellow and Free.” It’s similar to DBA and also worth checking. Some people post on one but not the other, so browse both for the best selection. You can filter by region and category easily.
  • Facebook Marketplace: Facebook’s built-in buy/sell platform is widely used in Sønderborg. You’ll see plenty of listings for used furniture, baby gear, appliances, and clothing. The advantage is ease of communication (everyone’s already on Messenger). There are also dedicated local Facebook groups like “Sønderborg køb, salg & bytte” (buy, sell & swap) where members post items for sale. Just search on Facebook for Sønderborg buy/sell groups and request to join – most are very active and a great place to both find second-hand items and ask the community if you’re searching for something specific.
  • Trendsales and Reshopper: If you’re specifically after second-hand fashion or children’s items, these Danish apps might be of interest. Trendsales is focused on clothing (especially branded or vintage fashion), and Reshopper is an app for parents to buy/sell kids’ stuff locally. You can set the location to Sønderborg in these apps to see items nearby.

Remember that online buying may involve arranging pickup or delivery. Most sellers in Sønderborg are open to coordinating a convenient meetup. And if you’re selling, clear photos and fair prices will help your items move quickly (people here love a good deal!).

We hope this guide helps you navigate and enjoy the second-hand shopping scene in Sønderborg. Each shop and market has its own character, so try visiting a few different places – you might be surprised by the unique treasures you’ll discover. Happy hunting, and velkommen til genbrugslivet i Sønderborg (welcome to the reuse life in Sønderborg)!
