Category Archives: Restaurants and cafes

Sønderborg has a good variety of restaurants and cafes. When we come across one we will write a blog of our experience. The food, the service the atmosphere. The island of Als has some great restaurants and some mediocre ones. Let us guide you to a great dinner.

Brunch at Cafe Figo

A few weeks ago Michael and I started our quest for testing out brunch options in town. The next opportunity came up when one of my friends suggested we do something together over the weekend. Managing the previous plans of all the girls meant that we opted for a Sunday brunch. Selecting the place was a bit harder, but we opted for the latest Sunday brunch buffet in town at Cafe Figo, since none of us had been there before.

Unlike most of the other places, Cafe Figo wasn’t super busy. This meant that even if we hadn’t booked a table, they would have easily found space for our table of 7. This could be as this buffet is quite new and is not advertised at all on their website, so people probably are not as aware of it as they are of the others. There is, in fact, very little information out there about what this brunch consists of, so will try to give a bit of details here.

The selection here is not super huge. On the day we were there (which I expect to be common) there was: Salmon and prawns, Cheeses, Eggs and bacon and liver pate, yoghurt, muesli and jam, some fruit, cinnamon rolls and pancakes (with maple syrup and honey) and bread. The buffet area is quite small, but items were regularly replenished when finished.

My favourites item from the buffet was the salmon. In fact, I opted for a second helping of this, rather than to taste the cheese. For those who know me (and my cheese cravings), this is probably quite strange. The prawns that were served next to the salmon were also really good. The bread was surprisingly (and, maybe, unexpectedly, for some reason?) fresh. The sweet stuff was OK, and was the yoghurt and jam.

Verdict: Not a very wide selection of food, but some of the items (salmon and prawns) were very good. Other items were OK, but nothing to write home about. One of the main downsides of this buffet is probably its price. At 115DKK per person, this is more expensive than the others close by and, unlike the others, doesn’t include any drinks. This could possibly explain why the cafe was quite empty.

Orkide – Thai food in Sonderborg

While living in London we were spoilt by a very good and very cheap Thai restaurant just round the corner from where we lived (check out Spicy Basil if you are in the area!). So I have been putting off visiting the local Thai place as I knew I had high expectations. However, when an occasion came up we decided to give it a go.

Atmosphere

On the day we visited there was no one at the restuarant, though a guy did join us later on. This is, possibly, understandable, as we were looking for dinner around 4:30 pm – not exactly Danish dinner time! Since we had good weather, we opted for sitting outside. If you do like we did, do go check out the inside!

Service

The person serving us, possibly the owner, was very friendly and open to giving suggestions. It was really service with a smile. However, considering that we were the only people in the restaurant, the food did take a bit long to appear.

Food

Between us we had the spring roll starters, a pad thai for me and a beef curry for Michael. I would probably opt for something else instead of the spring rolls. The pastry was absolutely lovely – crispy, flaky, thin – but I was less impressed with the filling. I felt that there was too much filling for the pastry, and would have probably expected a bit more vegetables in there. The consistency of the filling was quite uniform (as though everything was made into a mince). This might be the right way of doing it, but it is not what I have had before. They were perfectly edible, but would be willing to try something else.

On to the main dishes. The first thing that you notice is that the portions are huge. They looked nice and colourful, which is also nice with the eyes being the first to eat and all that. My pad thai was good, though not as spicy as I am used to. However, considering the different neighbourhoods of this restaurant to the more ethnically diverse London one, I was expecting this. The curry was very good, however, and spicy – just as we like it!

Overall

Don’t go if you are in too much of a hurry. The starter was a bit of a miss for me, but the mains were good. This meal, including drinks, came to around 400 DKK. And if visiting, don’t forget to check out the inside (and the toilets are not too shabby either!).

Brunch at Ib Rehne Cairo Cafe

Brunch is that delightful excuse for not waking up too early on a weekend, while still gabbing something substantial before you die of hunger by lunch. It seemed to have become all the rage in Denmark a few years ago (just before mojitos, tapas, and in the same league as pulled pork this year*), where on one visit to Denmark everyone pretty much invited us over to brunch!

To my delight, Sonderborg was not left behind in this trend, which has now become a staple weekend offering. All the cafes on the town square (and probably a couple of others) offer their own version. Now that the sun is starting to rise later, not waking us up early when we don’t want to, brunch on the weekends is sounding like a very good proposition. So we made a start with the offerings in town.

Ib Rehne Cairo ‘Brunch for Two’

Ib Rehne Cairo was the first establishment that we selected. There was no special reason for this, except that we had been given a voucher for this from friends a while back that we had to make use of. There are a variety of brunch items on the menu here, with a buffet brunch offered on Sundays. We were there on a Saturday so opted for the ‘Brunch for Two’. There is also a ‘Classic Brunch’ with a few less items.

Brunch til to hos Ib Rehne Cairo

When the food arrived my first concern was ‘oh – is there enough there for two’ – I do tend to suffer from much bigger eyes than a stomach – followed by ‘hmm – I hope there is enough bread’ – I do come from a country where we eat bread with anything; sort of like Danish potatoes, just at all meals! However, the food looked good, and I was hungry, so I started tucking in.

The food was good decent food. I was quite surprised to see that there wasn’t ‘two of everything’, which probably explained my first concern on if there was enough for two. Some of the decisions on what was double and what wasn’t seemed a bit arbitrary, such as two yoghurt containers, but only one fruit salad. Others were understandable, such as one salmon with smoked cheese. in this case, the amount of salmon we had was much larger than I had anticipated on first glance, so I was a happy salmon lover!

My favourites from the selection were the salmon with smoked cheese and the fruit salad. I also liked the cheeses (which is always a big hit with me – I love cheese!). I didn’t taste the pancakes, as I sacrificed mine to Michael in exchange for being able to finish up all the fruit salad. My lowest points were probably the egg-related stuff: the aeggekage and the vegetable ‘tart’ (oh – why don’t ‘tart’s in Denmark come in pastry?! I miss my pastry!). They were perfectly edible, but were not my highlights. And for those that are suffering from a hangover, you also get two rostis and one fried Camembert. Nomnom! More cheese!

So we ate, and we enjoyed, and all my previous worries disappeared. We didn’t manage to finish the food, and there was even a slice of bread left. I wonder if we had eaten all the bread whether we could have asked for more? That’s always something I am interested in, but I apologise – dear readers – I didn’t ask!

Verdict: good variety of items, right amount of food (with a bit left over). Coffee or tea included in price. Won’t make me run out and get it again anytime soon before I have had the chance to try out the other offerings in town, but happy to return to it in the second round. The price for two people was 226 DKK.

Aside: We are on the lookout to identify the best brunch offerings in town. Mainly we are looking at buffet or offerings which come with a wider selection of items, rather than ‘porridge’ or ‘scrambled eggs on toast’. Which one should we try, and any we shouldn’t even touch with a barge pole. And if you want us to check our your own establishment’s offerings?? We won’t say no a an investigatory invitation to sample your menu 🙂

*or is it just me who sees these trends in Denmark, where all of a sudden all restaurants/meals at friends offer the same thing was in neither of their food offerings the year before?

Thrill your tastebuds at Trillen

Trillen is the new lunch restaurant by Hotel Baltic in Horuphav. Opening on the 15th of January, it was perfect timing to try out for Michael’s birthday on the 20th.

Trillen Restaurant, Høruphav

The place interior is decorated similar to most Danish inns (kroer), hyggelig but dark. However, on the day we went there the sun was brightly shining outside and reflecting over the snow-white surroundings, making the restaurant nice and bright, unlike my experience of most such places. This made me a very happy Maltese guest!

The restaurant serves a traditional Danish lunch menu, mainly consisting of smorrebrod, or open sandwiches, with a number of other specialities. There were a lot of things that we would have loved to try but, of course, we had to limit ourselves! The waiters say that people typically order two pieces each, and that is what we did.

Smoked eel at Trillen, Høruphav

For our first round Michael tried the smoked eel and Ann the Gendarm salmon. I had never had eel before and for some reason I thought it would be much more fishy than it actually was. It was surprisingly delicate in taste. The Gendarm salmon was just as delicious. I particularly liked the combination of the smoked cheese and the salmon. They went together perfectly.

Gendarm Laks, Trillen

For the second round of dishes Michael went for the pot käse (pictured below) and Ann went for the old-days apple cake. Normally I would have a preference between dishes but these are two dishes that I would happily have eaten fully on my own (Note: the fact that I love cheese AND apple desserts definitely doesn’t hurt).

Pot käse at Trillen

The pot käse is a meld of cheeses that is served with plum jam and toasted rugbrod. It was quite strong in taste, so if you are not a cheese fan you may want to skip it. I loved it. The apple cake, on the other hand, is not what I would call a cake. Maybe more of a pudding. It consisted of apple compote over which whipped cream was layered and then sugared breadcrumbs sprinkled over. If I had read that description I may not have opted for it, since I love my doughs, but this was absolutely lovely.

So would we visit again? If there is a special occasion, it would definitely be on our list of places to visit. The food was delicious, but the price is quite high. The quality of food was worth it, but probably not a regular Sunday (or especially weekday) lunch place.

Trillen is open everyday from 11:30 to 17:00. The restaurant is not in the main Hotel Baltic building but just opposite, maybe 50m from the main entrance.

Indulging in the Christmas Menu at OX-EN Steakhouse

The site on which the restaurant OX-EN stands dates back to 1761, when a building was erected to be used as a residential building. From then, the building changed owners numerous times until the mid 1800s, when it was converted into a small business. It opened as OX-EN Steakhouse in 2003, a restaurant focussing on quality meat.

Having the reputation of a very good steakhouse, OX-EN was an obvious choice for a celebratory dinner with Michael’s parents and uncles. We arrived a bit late, by which time all the others had opted for the Christmas menu. A brief glanced quickly confirmed that it looks good, so we went along with the flow.

Suppe
Hjemmelavet kartoffel- og porresuppe med pesto og ristede skiver af sønderjyske kålpølser
Lune kuvertbrød og smør

Homemade potato and leek soup with pesto and roasted southern jutland sausage

Australsk oksemørbrad

Æble og marcipan
Æble, marcipan og mandler bagt i ovn med vaniljeis

Oven baked apple, marzipan and almond with vanilla icecream

It took a while for the soup to arrive, which was not ideal with a table of hungry Danes that had been travelling most of the day. Nevertheless, when the decent-sized soup arrived, it was definitely worth the wait! I loved the creaminess of the soup, especially with the sausage (and was happy to find more of that sausage in my bowl, besides the 3 pieces decorating the top of the dish!). I don’t really remember the pesto, but that possibly says more about how good the rest of the dish was and less about the pesto. The bread was also warm and crunchy on the outside. The bread was also left on the table for the main course – something which scores a million points with this Maltese girl!

The main consisted of beef tenderloin with a number of different sides. Although we regularly eat pork tenderloin, I do not remember ever having had beef tenderloin. The sight of them in Danish supermarkets disgust me, but if the taste of this one is anything to go by, this is absolutely something to try again. It was moist, it was tender, it was melt in your mouth goodness. And it was perfectly cooked! I was less of a fan of the sides, especially the apple and bacon mixture, and the cloying taste of the red cabbage, which made everything feel very heavy. However, for the meat I am more than willing to turn a blind eye to all the rest!

By now we really needed the inevitable wait between the main and dessert: my stomach clearly got the signal that Christmas time is near! I love almonds, and any apple dessert, so I was really looking forward to this one. And when it arrived it didn’t disappoint. Perfect end to a great meal!

This meal confirmed to me the place of OX-EN as one of the better restaurants in the area. Perfect if you are looking for a lesiurely meal. Not so if you want a quick one. But for the price, you probably want to savour all that you can get! The people serving you also appear happy to be there, which always makes it such a pleasure! Definitely somewhere to return to if a celebration is called for!

We forgot to get pictures of the food but over at Vibekes Mad there are pictures of a similar meal as ours.

Taste King Frederik’s favourite dish

I am not sure which King Frederik it is, or how they know that this was his favourite dish. But it is offered at Restaurant Colosseum, one of the restaurants along the harbour front in Sonderborg. The restaurant website doesn’t give much information about this dish besides that it is a house speciality, and an email I sent to the restaurant remained unanswered so I am none the wiser, but wherever it comes from, I am glad it is on the menu!

Camera Roll-625

The dish consists of ox in a spicy sauce. It is served with potatoes, french fries (yeps: both!) and small portions of chopped egg, onions and beetroot. The sauce is a rich, liberally supplied sauce, making it perfect for dipping your potatoes in it (alas, if I was back home I would love dipping bread, but this is Denmark, so no bread, just potatoes). It comes served as a very generous portion in a pan (yeps: a pan!) with the other side dishes in separate bowls. In fact, if you are not very hungry, or are taking a starter and dessert it may also be possible to share.

And if you are not in Sonderborg? Well, you can also make it yourself! Here’s the recipe:

Serves 4 people

  • 600-700 grams of flank steak
  • 4 tbsp chopped onions
  • 1.5 tbsp curry
  • 3 tbsp edelsüss paprika
  • 0.5 litre of whipped cream
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • A good splash of Worcestershire sauce

Cut the flank steak into strips and brown them well in the pan. The chopped onion is fried with the curry and paprika. Let it simmer for a bit. Whipped cream, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce are added. Let it boil for a couple of minutes.

Serve with potatoes and fries and as sides make:

  • One bowl of chopped eggs
  • One bowl of chopped onion
  • One bowl of chopped beetroot

Enjoy the Bounty of the Sea at Cafe Brag’s Fish Buffet

Brag is a fishing/shipping shop and smokery on the banks of the Dybbøl side of Sønderborg. However, if tackle and nets do not feature anywhere on your shopping list, there is still one major reason why you should check this place out. After all everyone has to eat right?

Brag Fisk Cafe Søsport

The history of the smokery goes back several generations and the family has been having a business in the current location for decades. During the winter you can drop by the shop to buy a portion of fish to take home and enjoy. They smoke their own fish and among the variety of items we have seen on sale (and recognised!) have been smoked herring, halibut, eels and salmon – but there are also other fish brought in by the fishermen. It’s a nice treat to cycle down there on a weekend and grab whatever takes our fancy for our lunch.

IMG_1470

However, from the first weekend in May to the end of August, Cafe Brag, which is to the back of the shop, is open for business. And you can sit and enjoy the view of life on the pier and Sonderborg across the water. This means that you can indulge in the food right there on the spot. The cafe serves fish dishes during the week, but on the weekends a fish buffet spread is organised.

Spinatrolade med dampet laks

Michael’s parents were visiting recently so we grabbed the opportunity to try it out. Now I am not necessarily the biggest fish fan (rarely if ever order fish at a restaurant), but the wide variety of items meant that this was not a problem. My favourite items were the fiskefrikadeller, the salmon/spinach rolls, and the steamed salmon. Every thing is made in their own kitchen and even the bread is homemade. The dishes were continuously replenished, so I didn’t have to forgo my favourites when a big group of people came in for their lunch.

Laksebrød

The fish buffet is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00. In 2012 it costs 145 DKK per person. Perfect for the fish lovers out there. However, if you are completely averse to fish and seafood, this is probably not for you, since every item, including the salads (though not the fruit basket), contains fish or sea food.

Valentines Day in Sonderborg

While it is cold outside you might want to warm up with someone special and celebrate Valentine’s Day this coming Tuesday.

We emailed the local cafe’s and restaurants to hear if they had any special offers next week. Here are their suggestions:

IMG_8338

Cafe Figo is the only place we found a dedicated Valentines offer. They have candlelight dinner with a special menu including welcome drink, tapas for two and dessert for 299DKK for a couple. To take advantage of the offer you need to book beforehand 74 44 90 44.

Restaurant OX-EN “is always a good place to spoil the one you love with great food in a cozy atmosphere.” OX-EN has a three course winter menu for 269DKK that looks really good.

Cafe Ib Rehne Cairo recommends their “Burger & Bio” offer. Get a cafe burger, a glass of beer, wine or soft drink – and a ticket for the cinema for 199DKK. Book table and pay at the cafe and reserve your seat in Kinorama cinema.

Jespers Kockkerier is not open on Vaentine’s Day. If you can wait until Friday Jesper has an offer called Nem Fredag (Easy Friday) where he prepares a two course dinner for 159DKK that you can heat at home. Book Friday before noon and pick upbetween 4pm and 7pm.

What are your plans for Valentines? Do you have ideas we have not mentioned here?

Painting heart with light

Review: Asian Wok House, Nordborg

Just down the road from Nordborg Bio is Asian Wok House. Having heard very good things about it from several people we decided to give it a try.

Asian Wok House is, as the name implies, an Asian restaurant. We were greeted warmly by our waiter and led to our choice of table. Surprisingly even though the restaurant officially opens at 5pm, there was already another table there when we arrived at 5:15, happily tucking in to their food, and the restaurant soon filled up with people.

The restaurant offers both an A’ la carte menu and a buffet (as well as a take away menu if for some reason the decor of the place doesn’t entice you to stay once you are in, or you are in a hurry). Wanting to have the opportunity to sample as many of the delights as possible, we opted for the buffet.

On asking if this is our first time, our waiter graciously took us over to the buffet area where he explained to us all that was on offer. The buffet is actually split into a normal buffet area and a Mongolian barbeque area, both of which you can sample as part of the buffet menu.

bd's Mongolian Grill

What I found to be a nice touch is that the waiters help you choose the sauces for your Mongolian buffet choices based on your choice of meat as well as preferences in terms of amount of spices, garlic etc. For a Mongolian barbeque virgin as me this was excellent. The meat, vegetables and noodles are then cooked on a big grill by the chef on hand for this purpose.

On the recommendation of the waiter we started our meal with a bowl of hot chicken soup, followed by a sampling of the Mongolian buffet and then the buffet. My favourite was definitely the Mongolian buffet noodle option I had with crab meat and squid, the fried prawns and chicken and the spring rolls.

My main issue with the restaurant is the same one I have with all the Danish restaurants I have been to so far, that the food is too salty for me. But then I guess that is really my issue rather than the restaurants’ now that I am in Denmark, since the Danes around me always seem to love it! Nevertheless, the very good service you get at this place and the taste of the food makes it a place to visit if you are looking for food in the area.
